Septuagenarian Oscar Rivers has been a part of the Charleston and Chicago jazz scenes since he was 11 years old. Having mastered the saxophone at an early age, Oscar moved to Chicago right after college where he played sax with musical legends Sonny Stitt, Quincy Jones, Melba Moore, BB King, Stevie Wonder, the Tempations, the Jackson Five, and more. He was also part of the house band for the legendary Regal Theater and his sax style has been compared to Charlie Parker.
Oscar Rivers Jazz features Charleston jazz patriarch, Oscar Rivers, on piano, Donald Fields on drums/percussion, and M Paul Gelpi on bass. The band performs as a trio, quartet, and quintet, and will add instruments and vocalists to fit the occasion, including saxophone and percussion.
The band performs any style of jazz, with a focus on Latin, standards and jazz-soul cross-over. Oscar and his band are comfortable playing from a jazz purist perspective, but are not afraid to incorporate other genres into their repertoire. Music is an experience and Oscar Rivers Jazz wants you to experience it with them!
